Out to my man Duke for sending this my way.Sir David breaking it down with the help of some legends. Playing everything from Tubby and Pablo to Bristol's Pinch / Massive Attack,  Dillinja and Mala. Dub - the original bassline music that influenced all modern day dance music and culture. I'm currently reading Deep Down With Dennis Brown by early reggae writer Penny Reel which details the scene in London in the 70s.  We The Raggamuffin. A short drama by Julian Henriques set in Peckham in 1992 giving an insight in the culture; music, fashion and violence at that time. My parents moved away from there when I was born so it's interesting to get an image of what it looked like then. With the gentrification of the area there isn't a better time for this to resurface (via Dazed & Confused). There's also subtitles for those of you who don't speak 'english'. 

BLACK HISTORY MONTH : THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS

Premiering this friday at the Young Vic, The Scottsboro Boys muscial, written by Kander & Ebb, tells the story of 9 black teenagers who were falsely accused of raping two white women on a train in Alabama in 1931. They were all sentenced to death by an all white jury  apart from the youngest who was 12 - whilst none of them were killed they all still served time. The series of trials eventually led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling that allowed black people to sit on juries. This April they were posthumously pardoned.  The production has been nominated for 12 Tony awards including Best Musical.

A short film about Ruby, a young girl who’s learnt the ways of the world through Youtube tutorials and spends her days hiding behind her computer screen. When she falls for online DJ Vinyl Lionel she has to shut her laptop and go meet him for real. A romantic comedy that looks at the contemporary issues of isolation through the Internet, trolling and digital love.

12 O'CLOCK BOYS DOCUMENTARY

Been waiting for this one for 28 weeks according to my Instagram. This is another look into Baltimore through the lens of first time director Lofty Nathan.  I still working through the first season of The Wire so this serves as good motivation to persevere. It follows the protagonist  and  'grown ass man,' Pug, who is in fact 12 over the course of 3 years as he tries to become on of the 'Boys'.  The impressive slow motion shots that glamourise these inner city daredevils are contrasted with insights on the realities of single parent life and blurry camera phone videos of dead bikers laying on the street. In a Tom and Jerry-esque situation except with bikes and helicopters  these guys risk their life just for a momentary escape from their reality whilst being hounded by the police. Between drug dealing and 'wheelieing' the bikes are clearly the lesser of two evils.
